Why Karna and not Arjuna.............

I grew up hearing a lot about Arjuna. About how brave he was and how he was instrumental in the Great Indian battle of the Good vs Evil. Almost unnoticed in the story goes Karna. The tragic hero. The sorry second.
All along the great epic of the Mahabharata, the story of Karna is that of poise, utmost loyalty, tragedy and the ultimate betrayal. No other mythological character, commands such awe and yet cuts such a tragic figure.

The birth of Karna is undesired by his mother. His foster parents, perhaps are the only people who don't take anything away from Karna and therefore hardly get a mention in the whole epic. Cursed by his teacher (Parushurama) for lying about his parentage into forgetting the incantation of a Brahmastra when required the most, Karna proceeds to make his way up. He makes a friend in Durydhona. One of the key relationships in his life. With unwavering loyalty he sides his friend. Durydhona, in return for the kingdom of Anga, asks for Karna's heart. Karna replies "Its already yours"

The complications in his character are also evident during the dice game. He is fighting his own demons. The Great Warrior Karna loses to the Karna who is weighed down by the weight of a crown gifted by Durydhona. Scorned by Draupadi at first during her Swayamvar for his humble parentage. He is incensed when Draupadi does not turn to him for help when she is being humiliated. Years of neglect, humiliation pours out in the only one moment when Karna is not himself. "Unsheathe the dark sword Draupadi from the scabbard of her clothes, she has been dangling all this while on the hips of the impotent Pandavas. Like the shrieking of a flock of parrots fluttering out of their tree-holes these words emerged scattering in a flurry of green feathers... I lifted the plate of my years- long neglect, filled with the flaming embers of revenge and emptied it on Draupadi's proud head"
And Karna feels ashamed. Of himself. He realizes that he has lowered himselves to the level of Kamsa and Shishupala.
However, the two most outstanding virtues of Karna would be his his Supreme Gift of generosity and his spirit of sacrifice. Karna's name is synonymous with sacrifice. It is this infalliable spirit of sacrifice that sets him apart from all other men. The King of Gods , Indra knew that Karna is invincible as long as he has the Kavach (Armour) and the Kundal (earrings) he was born with. Indra also knew that Karna would never refuse anything to anyone. Indra, disguised as a poor brahmin, asks for the armor and the earrings and Karna knows that he was wasn't helping a poor brahmin but Indra in disguise as his father (The Sun God) had already warned him in a dream.
But he readily obliges. The armor and the earrings refuse to part with his body. He cuts them off with a knife and gives it to Indra. Indra, shamed into generosity by Karna's gesture grants him the boon of using his most powerful weapon but only once.
Refusing to side with his brothers after learning the truth about his parentage. Karna symbolises the true spirit of friendship. Surya and Kunti try to cajole Karna to their side. But Karna refuses to side with the Pandavas. but promises his mother that he will not kill any of her sons except Arjuna. Arjuna, his most intense rival. They both have sworn to kill each other. He says that she will have always five sons not six. Either him or Arjuna. He also agrees to use the Naga-Astram against Arjuna only once. And requests his mother to keep the secret of his birth a secret until he dies,He being the true heir to the throne. The lure of power fails to corrode Karna's loyalty towards his friend.

Karna loses the opportunity to use Indra's weapon against Arjuna when Duryodhan asks Karna to save them from Ghatotkacha, the half-asura son of Bhima. Killing an asura at night would require a divine weapon. And Karna had the opportunity to use it only once. And without his armour and earrings. He had to take on an Arjuna, widely equipped with divine weapons, in the battlefield. But by using Indra's weapon against Ghatotkacha, Karna loses his sure weapon for Arjuna's death.
After Dronacharya's fall, Karna faces and defeats all the Pandavas except Arjuna. But spares their lives keeping his promise to Kunti. Fighting with Arjuna , he is first betrayed by his own charioteer, Shalya. And when he fires an all powerful weapon to kill Arjuna, Krishna plunges the chariot into the ground, saving Arjuna narrowly as the arrow strikes Arjuna's crown instead. After putting up a spectacular display of archery Karna's chariot sinks into the ground and the wheels get stuck in the soil. This was apparently due to a curse by a Brahmin whose cow he had killed by mistake. His charioteer refuses to help him. Karna disengages himself from the combat and while he is attempting to remove the wheel from the mud, Krishna exhorts Arjuna to attack Karna. Parushurama's curse ensures that Karna cannot recall the incantation for the Brahmastra and the chariot wheel remains stuck.

Karna in life and in death was all poise. Karna and Lord Krishna have a lot in common. Both being of divine origin, brought up by foster parents, warring with their own relatives. One despite being the king of Anga, was called the son of a Charioteer throughout his life. While the other, being the Supreme Lord Himself, is a Charioteer in War.But, Karna, unlike Krishna, does not even wish to forget his foster parents and beloved of that Suta caste. Krishna does not try to alleviate the pain caused to Karna throughout his life. But callously asks him to change sides in War by revealing facts about his birth.

When Karna was in his dying breath,Krishna assumed the form of a poor Brahmin and approached him. Krishna asked for gold in order to perform the marriage of his son. He implores Karna saying that he had heard a lot about him and not knowing his plight , had come to ask for the favor.

"Oh what a pity! Please go to my wife, she will give you as much gold as you need", said Karna.

The Brahmin broke into a laughter. He said, "For the sake of a little gold have I to go all the way to Hastinapura? If you say, you are not in a position to give me what I ask, I shall leave you."

Karna declared, "As long as breath remains in me, I will not say ‘no’ to anyone." Karna opened his mouth, showed the gold fillings for his teeth and said, "I shall give this to you. You can take them."

Assuming a tone of revulsion, the Brahmin said, "What is it you suggest? Do you expect me to break your teeth and take the gold from them? How can I do such a wicked deed? I am a Brahmin."

Immediately, Karna picked up a stone nearby, knocked out his teeth and offered them to the Brahmin. Krishna in his guise as Brahmin wanted to test Karna further. "What? Are you giving me teeth dripping with blood as a gift? I cannot accept this. I am leaving", he said.

Karna pleaded, "Swami, please wait for a moment." Even while he was unable to move, Karna took out an arrow and aimed it at the sky. Immediately rain dropped from the clouds. Cleaning the teeth with the rain water, Karna offered the teeth with both his hands. Krishna then reveals himself to Karna.

Krishna begged for forgiveness to Karna, something he did not from any other individual who lost their life in the war. As always, the generous Karna, fully aware that Krishna caused his cruel death, forgives Krishna, a sign of the extreme generosity which has not been seen in epics before, even from Gods. But then Karna also indicts Krishna and asked questions that will always remain unanswered. "Why did he not slay Jarasandha with the infallible discuss? Why did he flee in Mathura? How could Jarasandha, whom Karna defeated, defeat Krishna? Above all, who is Krishna?"

Krishna then grants Karna the sight of his Viswaroopa- The vision of the mighty Lord Vishnu. Even Vishnu is overwhelmed by Karna's generosity. Karna is sent straight to heaven. A place the Pandavas would have great difficulty getting in.

Karna is the best example where an extremely talented, righteous individual is doomed because of his association with the Evil. A man wronged because of the choices he made in life. The only blot to his image would be his role in killing an unarmed Abhimanyu. His affection for Duryodhan led to his downfall. And Karna was aware of that. But still he chose to side with his friend.

I have written more about Karna in the post below. It was prompted after watching the Tamil movie Karnan and it’s slightly different ending. I have also listed a few more anecdotes  about Karna there. Click on the link below for that post.

Hey Buddy ...

Excellent Posts .. Though kindly allow me to add a few pointers which might have been missed ......

Karna's wheel getting stuck --> This is how it goes ....

Athiratha ( Karna' Dad ) .. was a charioteer for the Pandava king .. and Karna used to take his place on certain occasions .. Once during sunset, when he was in a hurry for one of his errands and went full speed ... precisely at that moment, a small child was crossing the path ..and on seeing the fast approaching sight of the chariot at striking distance , the pail of milk that she was holding fell on the earth and the entire milk spilled...

Naturally, she started crying and a remorseful Karna promised to get her another pail of milk ..... But the girl whimpered that her mother would scold her if she went back for more ....

keeping the best interest of the girl in his heart, Karna ( who was a disciple of Parashu bhai ) dug his hands into the earth and started extracting every ounce of the milk into the utensil.....

As soon as he had finished filling up the vessel with milk .. he saw a strange apparition coming on the surface of the milk ....

An angry face, that of the Mother Earth ..and she remarked " The milk, however unintentional, was an offering for me and you dare to take it from me .. for that you would pay bitterly ".. To which our hero calmly replied "Oh Mother !! I apologise, but for the sake of this child's tears I am willing to give you anything in return for this sacrilege., .. ...

Hearing this the Mother Earth started laughing and said ..ha Ha !! I know you would give me anything .. for you never send anyone empty handed ... but believe me , I would take something from you when you are in the least position to give it ... ( Note : There was no mention about the what she would take in return !! ) .....

Now the Question is .. where does this come into picture ....

In the Final battle , when Karna has the upper hand over Arjuna after hurting him with the Naga - Astra , that is preciely the time when Mother Earth takes his wheel as an offering .. and Karna realises as to why the wheel got stuck .......

About the Brahmin's curse --- >>>> ...Brahmins cursed him thus "... as you have killed my pious and defenseless cow for no fault of hers .. so shall you meet your end when you are the most defencelss & vulnerable .... ..."

Hey .. and Karna didnt lie to Parashu Bhai .....

Allow me to explain it a bit ...

As mentioned earlier, Karna used to be a part time charioteer and used to have occasional glimpses of the Princes ... Once he heard a commotion and noticed that Bhima struck a ball very powerfully and it fell in the well .. A despairing Yudhisthir asked all passerby's to retrieve the ball but to no avail .. Now , at that moment, Drona who was passing by took note of yudhishtir's grief .. and helped retrieve the ball using amazing skills .. which promptly made him the Guru of the Pandavas & Kauravas .. Now , our Karna bhai may be a charioteer but he's actually a Kshatriya by birth .. so he kind of requests Drona to teach him too . Drona, being a Brahmin scoffs him off and tells ..." Go to Parashooram , he would take anyone !!" ....

And so a dejected Karna goes to Parshoorama and says " Oh Venerable One .. I am a Suta Putra , but I yearn to seek the knowledge that has eluded me .. ( He gives a few eloquent speeches .. and Parashoorma is mighty impressed ) .. and promptly Parshu anna takes him into custody and teaches him all that he knows ...

Now comes the turning point , Parashoo was sleeping on Karna's lap ... when the bee started stinging him .. and Parshu woke up and sai .." You are not a Suta putra , but a Kshatriya ...!! Onlya Kshatriya can bear that !!! ... and thus curses him .... Now Karna is shocked and pleads his innocence and says that I am the Sun of adhiratha , the charioteer and Radha , his wife .. and not a Kshatriya ( as he is obviously unaware of his true parentage ) ...

Realising the truth , Parshu says that he can't take it back but gives him a blessing that " You will achieve what you truly wish to achieve' ... and he says .." You , my son, are my equal " !!

Now note that Drona was taught by Parashoormaa ( not taught techinically , but that's long story ) .. and Arjuna by Drona ..

Finally , Karna only promises Kunti that , she can only dream of 6 children but will always have 5 children ( This is a very clever statement, as you see that he still has kept Duryodhana's friendship in mind ) ....

.. and hey !! Karna didnt promise the use of Nagastra only once ....

It goes something like this ....

When the first Nagastra humiliated Arjuna , a snake approached Karna and requested him to use the same Naga astra to which the snake will enhance its powers ( as the snake's mother had been killed by Arjuna ) .... Karna politely declines the offer saying that .. a true warrior does not use the same astra twice, especially after the first one missed the mark .....

Sadly the snake went after Arjuna on his own and was sadly given a ticket to the Hastinapur Graveyard....

Whew !! Sorry long post .. Got carried away .. Hope you don't mind ...

Thanks once again & Great Post !!

@Prachi
Hi, I have always been a fan of Karna and I was on the lookout for a book by the name Mrityunjaya which was in Marathi and I wanted an English translation which, sadly is, very rare.
Suryaputra.. hmm.. do you know the name of the author by any chance??

@The Chronicler
Thanks buddy! It's just that I am not too regular on this blog.
You seem to be pretty well informed about Karna and the Mahabharata. It never ceases to fascinate me.
Karna had lied to Parushuram about his parentage.
Parushuram says to Karna that 'Only a Kshatriya can bear such pain , a Brahman cannot.'
Yes, he did not promise to use the Nagastra only once. I have corrected that in the second post about Karna.
Exams.. exams.. I reply again..! Thanks for dropping in though.. I loved your post..! :)

hello everyone!

i wanted to point out some interesting details which we often ignore:
1. karna was surya dev's son right?
2. yudhisthir was dharmaraj ie yamaraj's son right?
3.the Madri twins were the sons of the Ashwins right?
4. ok now i come to my point
the ashwins and yama were surya dev's sons too!!foll this logic,Karna was yudhitir's and the twin's chacha!!!??(together with being their bro too)
btw karna is my fav mhb character too and i believe he was the best archer(personal opinion only)

@Zidezho
I don't read Malayalam either. But I can recommend Mrityunjay to people who wish to read one of the best works on Karna

Ayyappan said...

@Anon
True. But the fact remains that they have a common mother and that makes them brothers.
The Chacha relation becomes secondary.
Maybe, though sometimes I feel that Eklavya would have been the best archer...

Hi the chronicler

just wanted to say that the spilt milk/ghee episode in karna's life is unfair, if it did happen so,it would be the only thing where karna was 100 percent innocent.karna squeezes the earth to help a small girl, mother earth feels hurt but lord krsna eats earth she feels blessed just bcoz he is the lord...and yeah i also wanted to know if im wrong in thinking that lord krsna had planned karna'a death from the very beginning when he was sent as peace msger to hastinapur

However great a man, if he sides with evil, it will lead to his downfall. Karna's life teaches us this great truth. If Karna truly wished Duryodhana's welfare he would have counseled him against his evil ways. Karna remaining a mute spectator at Draupadi's 'vastraharan' and participation in Abhimanyu's killing blotted the otherwise supreme qualities. That's why Vidur who never endorsed the evil ways of the Kauravas was a Mahatma and not Karna

Ayyappan said...

//That's why Vidur who never endorsed the evil ways of the Kauravas was a Mahatma and not Karna//

Can't agree more..! Though I would also like to add that the Vastraharan episode hurt Karna's ego more as Draupadi ignores Karna when she implores everyone in the court..! Abhimanyu's death, though is a blot on Karna's character..!

Perhaps that is what makes the Mahabharata so amazing.. no one is shown as Good or evil..like the Batman and the Joker... everything has shades of grey..!

Hai everybody!

In one website i read that surya dev's childrens are four ie., shani, yama, yamuna & Tapti.

But we all are known, Karna is the son of surya dev in Mahabharat.

My question is why they are not taken karna as surya dev's son?

Kunal:

Hey friends u should accept z truth zat both Arjun and Karna were one of the greatest warriors of their time! N debate will continue 2go on this topic but for me Arjun was,is and will alwaz remain the greatest warrior and greatest archer of all time! That's a few reason why:

1. Arjun did not attain any knowledge by fluk,he was Drona's Best student even though some may argue that Drona didnt teach Karna for his to knw abt who was the best student.

2. Arjun fought all the battles without any armour unlike Karna who had its Kawach during Virat yudh. If Arjun wanted he could hav slayed Karna,Duryodhun,Dushasan and the others alone bt he himself told the prince, who was his charoteer in zat war that he dnt want 2kill them like that.

3. During the war when Abhimanyu was killed by treachery,Arjun was in a rage by the death of his son and he was killing and slaying everyone on his path as he wanted 2 slay jaidrath. At that time even Karna faced him and Arjun defeated him twice bt Arjun spare his life as at that time the main aim of Arjun was slaying jaidrath and we all know that Arjun is well-known for his aim and vision jus like seeing only z bird eye during its education! N here z bird's eye was Jaydrath n not Karna, zats y Karna was very lucky zat Arjun didnt kill him.

4. Arjun never killed whoever by any treachery unlike Karna who killed Abhimanyu like a coward and z worst thing is zat all those "so-called" great warriors danced round the body of z gr8 Abhimanyu. It was z kaurau who used treachery first and its only after that zat the Pandav also used it.

5. The even lord Parashuram, who was Karna's teacher told to Karna that is war is meant for Arjun to win because Arjun was with TRUTH n DHARMA bt Karna was with ADHARMA and SIN. So how can some1 fighting for the wrong cause be greater than some1 fighting for TRUTH??
N Parashuram told Karna zat Arjun is and will alwaz be z greatest warrior bt u also will be remembered in z same line as Arjun.........

Note: People said that Karna was weakened because of the curse on his bt the curse was jus to justify equality in the war. Karna had the Kawach which would hav made him immortal, so jus to make him mortal and equal at war it was important to take his kawach. Arjun had never killed any innocent animal bt karna did and he had to pay for his sin. Arjun never insulted any woman bt Karna did when he called Drawpadi as prostutute, thus he had to pay for this sin also. There are numerous sins zat Karna has commited,so how can he be z greatest???

For me z greatest warrior in Mahabharata was Arjun together wiz Bhisma and Drona...............

arguing on who was right and who was wrong is different than arguing on bravery, warmanship and archery.
Its an endless debate as to who was a better archer but when it comes to warmanship karna was far ahead then arjuna because he was the chief of kaurav army and arjuna was just a warrior in pandava's army.
Secondly karna had the defeated all the other 4 brothers before he encountered arjuna.
Its true that he failed to defeat arjuna each time he encountered him but that was due to his guru's curse which meant that karna would forget his vidya(and not brahmastra) during his crucual fight.
Karna did insult dropadi and killed abhimanyu in unjust way but look it in this way: that he was ready to take upon any sin for his friendship. Also, inspite of knowing that arjun was his brother and abhimanyu his niece he had no second thought on using his most deadliest weapons against them. Regarding drona and bhisma i personally feel that they were confused regarding their roles as they were defending hastinapur without killing pandav brothers. Kaurav's lost nt because of dharma or adharma philosopy, but because of role clarity which is the problem with our corporate system as well :-)

How can you even say that Indra took the Kavach from Karna to make him equal in war? Do you even know that Arjun had two mighty mody guards(Krishna and Hanuman sitting in the chariot) ? They both protected Arnjun from many powerful weapons fired by Karna which Arjun did not have any answer to it. They include Vaishnav-Astra and Nagastra, both could have ended Arjuna. Lord Krishna praised Karna when he shook up Arjun's chariot with his powerful strokes of arrows. When asked to explain by Arjuna; Krishna replied saying no human had the power to shake up his chariot with two divine people protecting the chariot - Krihna and Hanuman. Even Bheeshma and Drona couldn't have shaked the chariot.Karna's fate was he never got a fair chnce to fight Arjuna all his life.

question : -which highest order astra used in mahabhrat and by whom ?
answer :- Pashupathsathra by arjun. karan and bhisma didn’t have it even though both were parshuram’s student,
dron was amazed when he saw that …he had braham dand (power of all devastra in one ) .. but never used ..
so when it comes to devastra in mahabhrat
1.parshuram (have all and immortal)
2.dron (have all but mortal)
3.arjun (have all except braham dand and mortal)
4.bhism(immortal and can handle any astra)
5.ashwashthama (immortal , narayanshtra and brhamstra)
6.karan(had brahamstara, shakti and nagastra)

arjuna is definitely better than karna. Modern movies and novels have mad him hero and greater than arjuna. In no instance of mahabharatha was arjuna defeated by karna. BR chopra mahabharath which shows as karna stopped sending arrow to arjuna as it was going to sunset was not true. It is trash. Arjuna is greates warrior in earth after Lord Krishna. Mrtiyunjaya is written by some karna fan

Rohan said...

Arjuna was definitely greater than Karna and it has bee proved by a lot of instances. The first was when Drona sent Kauravas to defeat Drupada, Kauravas took along Karna with them but still were defeated and sent back and Drupada was eventually defeated by Pandavas (mainly Arjuna and Bhima). In the next instance when Kauravas including Karna were captured by Gandharvas they had to be rescuded by Arjuna and Bhima. if Karna was so great he could have defeated both Drupada and Gandharvas who were defeated by Arjun and Bhima.
Lastly of course during Virat yudha Arjun single handely defeated all the kauravs including Karna which is well known.
When people say Karna had a curse to forget the mantras for astras, they should remember that not all wars in those times were astra wars some were only shshtra wars and even in those wars Arjuna has excelled against Karna.

In terms of magnanamity of nature Arjun is greater than any one else. No one from either side but Arjun thought that he should leave the war becuase victory by killing his own relatives and friends would give him no joy. In fact when Arjun after the war learnt that Karna was his brother, and Kunti had not told him that he was very upset with herand said that if he knew it he would have never killed him. As aginst that even though karna knew Arjun was his brother, he never refrained from exhibiting his rivalry with him abd always held a grudge against Arjuna.

Arjuna is the greatest of all warrior.
Karna may be good at one or more instances but was not an overall a good man as a whole.
He insulted Dropadi,a helpless woman. This doesnot suit a Warrior of his kind.
He in turn was a part of brutal murder of teen Abhimanyu , who fought with no weapon using a wheel of a broken Chariot against Great warriors all alone on his own.
Karna killed a teen unarmed. This does not suit a warrior.
He may be great man , but he was more driven by his lunatism aginat Arjuna.
Why he hated Arjuna ??? He aspire to be the greatest archer, which he know was Arjun. He knows Arjun is a worthy opponent.
Arjuna never hated Karna instead ignored him. It is Karna's action against Arjuna wife and Son that made him to get bad aginst Karna.

Offcourse Arjuna and Karna both were overconfident about theri skills.

Karna: has the armour of Sun and belief to be the best archour. And a seried of Divya astra which arjuna dont have.
Arjuna: ??? he too has belief to be the best archour. He knows how to use Bhramastara and how to recreate them.

But one thing Which make Arjuna great is the truthfulness ,through out from the beginning till the end.He knows to recreate Brhamaastra the deadliest weapons of all. Adn u know why he knows this thing, because Drona knows Arjun can never do wrong. And thats why he taught this trick only to Arjuna and not even to his own son, whom he loved the most.

Arjuna could have used Bhrmahastra aginst Karna the very first time he would have encountered him in the war. Unlike Kran who saved his Brhmaastra for Arjun.

Kara is good with one or two qualities , but Arjuna is superior to Karna in all the qualities.

U might say Arjuna was prince and learned all the thing easily. True but you must also consider that all Pandava and kuarva were taught archery form same Guru, but it was Arjuna Determintaion that made him the great archour of All.
Yes Karna to has same passion but lacked the overall goodness which Arjuna has. He was loved By Lord Krishna for this.

Lord krishna parised Krna for his good thing but he also scolded him for his wrong deeds.

So Karna may be a Worthy Competitor, but was not the gretest warrior, which in tunr Arjuna is

Ayyappan said...

A lot of wrong points here :

1. Draupadi insulted Karna first and her cockiness instigated Karna's tirade against her. Which Karna regrets immediately.

2. Karna participated in Abhimanyu's killing. It was wrong. I agree. (Only blemish in an otherwise ideal character.)

3. The hatred against Arjuna was more of rivalry which became bitter with time. It started when Karna challenged Arjuna for a duel and was rebuked for not being of royal birth.

4. Karna had the Kavach, which he willingly gave away to Indra (Arjuna's father in disguise). Karna knew it was Indra as he was warned by Surya.

5. Karna knew to use the Brahmastra too. But was cursed by Parushurama. Karna would forget the incantation for the Brahmastra when he would need it the most.

6. Arjuna was widely equipped with divine weapons and Karna had only one divine weapon which Indra gave to him. It might've finished Arjuna but Karna used it against Ghatotkach because Duryodhan insisted. The second time, a serpent whose mother was killed by Arjuna takes the form of Nagasakti (a powerful weapon) and enters Karna's quiver. Krishna saves Arjuna from sure death by pushing the chariot into the ground. Karna refuses to use the weapon again.

7. Drona did teach Arjuna but you forget that Karna learnt archery from Parusurama, who is Drona's teacher. Karna forgets it because of Parusurama's curse.

8. No friend, again you're wrong. If Arjuna was the best archer among the Pandavas, then Bhim was the most powerful and was deadly with the mace. Yudhishtir was among the best when it came to the usage of the spear. Among the twins, one was very good with warfare (Sorry, cant recall which one.). Archery cannot be the only barometer.

9. And Krishna did not praise Karna, he apologised to him in the end. And Karna's pyre is in Krishna's hand.

10. Duryodhan and Karan attain heaven first. Yudhishtir and the other Pandavas serve some time in hell. (Speaks volumes about their righteousness, doesn't it?!)

Hi all, I'm Adisty, I came from Indonesia n I love Daan Veer Soora Karna =)
I know he was make some mistakes, like humiliated Drupadi n take a part to kill Abimanyu. But Drupadi insult him first, n Karna broke up Abimanyus bow because an order of Drona as chief commander of Kurawa.
I thinks Karna is the best archer. If Arjuna is the best archer, he don't need Ekalaya thumb. Remember, he feel envy n jealous to Ekalaya, n tell Drona about Ekalaya skill. Said that Drona have an other lovely student. Finally, Drona ask Ekalaya to cut his thumb n give his thumb *with a ring* to Arjuna. Ekalaya soul finally make a revenge n kill Drona in Kurushetra (why Ekalaya not kill Arjuna???)
The died of Ekalaya make his wife became a widow, his child became a orphan n his people lost their king, just because Arjuna feel envy n jealous with Ekalaya skill.

Sorry my English bad.

The original Mahabharat written by Vyas Muni has mentioned that Arjuna never defeated by karna. Even if Lord Krishna not his side , Arjuna can alone defeat the entire kavrav army including Karna. Actually today in modern day, Films and movies showing Karna a great hero because of his tragedy in life. Yes, It's true that karna was finest archer and as good as Arjuna but not better than Arjuna in any ways. Why people forget that inspite of royal family and first right of pandvas on Hastinpur, there were cheated and betrayed, and many times planned to kill by Duryodhaya and Shakuni. Pandavs have struggled the entire life also. If any people read Mahabharat written by Vyas Muni, there is not a single incident which explains that karna defeated Arjun. While Arjuna defeated karna several occasions.

Every sportpersons in year in India is given 'Arjuna Award' for outstanding performance not the 'Karna Award'. This proves Arjuna greatness.

Arjuna will and always remain best archer of the world. He is perfect example for student. Every student should take inspiration from Arjuna. Every student and any person always should see their goals. Arjuna teaches us the how to focus on any goals and how you have to deterministic to achieve it.

If Arjuna was not best men or not on Dharma side, then why Lord Sri Krishana on his side. Lord Shiva has given him Pashpastra and boon that noone will defeat Arjun. And when Arjun prays to Adishaki Durga before mahabharat war, why Durga said that I am always with you Arjuna.

This proves that when Adisakti Durga was on Arjuna side then no one should doubt, no one answer who his best, no one can question.

When Sri Krishana, Lord Shiva and Adisakti Durga on Arjuna side then it proves that Arjuna was and always remembered as best man and finest archer and good man following dharma.

Lord Shiva himself gifted the pasupata astra(The ultimate weapon if used can destroy the entire world) to Arjun knowing that Arjun would never use it in any situation; which is a vindication of the fact that Arjun is equal to Lord Shiva. The opening statement of mahabharat says that this is the story of Nara,Narayana (Nara being Arjun and Narayana as krishna) Salute them before reading this great epic.

There are no doubts Arjuna was the best. Arjuna was Arjuna. Karna was defeated even by bhima. As far as i know bhima refrained from killing karna only because of Arjunas vow. Bhima was the greatest and most powerful warrior and Arjuna was the best archer with unmatched arsenal of astras including the most potent pashupatasra. But he did not use these celestial weapons proactiely but only as retaliation.

Karna and Arjuna - debate can be made eirther way, but the first thing to decide is, are we choosing the Greatest warrior or Archer?
If we are looking for Archer, there is little to choose among them. Karna performed all the tricks Arjun had at the Rangabhumi, and during Draupadi's Swayamvar, all kings and warriors failed (Krishna was a spectator, Bhishma would not compete) except Karna and Arjun. They fought each other for the first time after Karna was rejected by Draupadi and Arjun hit the target, was evenly match until Karna, not knowing he was contesting Arjun, withdrew, unwilling to fight a "Brahmin". They will face each other as warriors during at the Kuru battle.
To judge how they shaped up as warriors, please not the following:
•Self taught Eklavya was the only one who was better at archery (Krishna I assume was better than all in everything) until Drona had him cut off his thumb.

As a warrior, Arjun accumulated things that enhanced his prowess as an archer:
•The Gandiva bow could not be cloven like other bows, had several bow strings so if one broke or was cut, little time would be wasted in putting up another string.
•He developed the skill to how to wear impenetrable armor (which normal weapons cannot pierce) from Drona, which he then taught Abhimanyu.
•Blessings from various deities (Others like Jayadrath did this too, Karna, perceived as a Suta might not have been able to).
•Use of major celestial weapons in heaven no less, and their counter moves, plus the use of "Brahmashira" and "Pashupat" - no one else, even Krishna had obtained them.
In the Kuru battle, Arjuna had these added advantages:
•Arjun's chariot was of divine origin, drawn by immortal horses faster and sturdier than earthly mounts.
•His two quivers never ran out of arrows. Other warriors needed to keep supplied with arrows, while Arjuna could roam freely in battle, not tied to a supply line.
•Hanuman had promised Bhima to sit atop the Chariot and scream, rendering Arjuna's enemies "half dead with fright."
•Krishna, who's wit and skill alone sets him apart as an individual, was Arjun's guide. This alone probably equaled all the other advantages Arjuna had. Krishna had the rare combination of intellect, stratagem, foresight and tactical sense to back up his warrior skill.
•Krishna, breaking his promise to remain a non combatant, blunted the "Vaishnab Ankush" used by Bhagadatta, a skill unknown to Arjun. Karna received no such help.
•Arjun had no handicaps that are mentioned in Mahabharata.
Karna's advantages as a warrior included:
•The Vijaya bow, which Parashurama used 21 times to kill off warriors and Kings. Karna used this only in his last battle (no reason given in Mahabharata why).
•His Amrita made armor (kavacha) and earrings (kundala). Aside from repelling weapons his wounds were also healed, so Karna could not be killed as long he possessed them. However, nothing is mention if Karna could be knocked senseless while wearing his armor.
•He had a special snake-headed arrow, which was kept in a separate quiver.
•Karna did not possess the "Brahmashira" or the "Pashupat" weapons, but had the "Vargavastra".
•Karna was cursed that his knowledge of celestial weapons will desert him at the time of his greatest need, and his chariot wheel would sink to the ground.

To compare the last battles of the two brothers, Karna, wounded, purged of the knowledge of celestial weapons, realizing his curses are about to bring about his death, managed to knock Arjun senseless (only the second time during the 18 days Arjun lost consciousness), but chose to follow Dharma over gaining victory and was murdered. Arjun, faced with common thieves, could only watch helplessly as he could not even remember to use his bow.

During the 18 Days:
Arjun was always successful during the battle. There few challenges he faced were:
•Bhishma gave Arjun the most trouble during his tenor as Kuru Commander. Arjun could not beat him in a fair fight.
•Among the Samsaptakas, Shusharma, King of Trigarta, knocked Arjun senseless once.
•Bhagadutta almost killed him with Vaishnab Astra, but , Krisha saved him.
•King Srutayudh had a mace called "Varundutta". No warrior could survive its blow, but if used on an unarmed person it kills the owner. Srutayudh hit Krishna when confronting Arjun. Saved by luck.
•Arjun had to strike Bhurisrava without warning to save Satyaki. All soldiers, Kuru and Pandava, condemned this act. Aside from failed to defeat Bhishma and kill Karna fairly, this is the only blot of his career.
•In the last phase before Joyadrath was killed, Karna, Kripa, Ashvattama, Vrishasen, Duryodhan and Dushasan managed to keep Arjun at bay. Only Krishna's intervention saved him.

Karna had lost his armor before the 18 Days. He suffered some outright defeats:
•On his first day of combat, Drona and Jayadratha had to rescue him from Satyaki. Satyaki would go on to defeat Karna three more times (sparing his life once) before Karna would comprehensively beat him at least twice.
•Bheema would defeat Karna several times, knock him senseless once. Karna spared Bheema once.
•Abhimanyu drove Karna from the field thrice. It was Karna who, along with Kritavarma and Kripa, destroyed Abhimanyu's bow, Chariot and Horses with a simultaneous sudden strike. Then Drona destroyed his sword and Karna his shield.
•Karna and Arjun faced each other several times when Drona led the Kuru army. Arjun won these contests while Karna was rescued by other Kuru warriors. It is worth noting that Karna possessed the Shakti Astra given by Indra during these battles but did not use it. Krishna commented that he had used his Maya to make Karna forget about the weapon.

Hi! I like this post. I'm a fan of Karna too! But I have some questions... Did
Krishna really show his Viswaroopa like yoi mentioned above? Is it really mentioned on Mahabharat book (the original version.. the one which wrote by Veda Vyasa)? Is there any proof od that? Thank you.

Well written but filled with inaccuracies...for starters,
Krishna never abandoned his foster parents and he never 'callously' divulged details of karna's birth before the battle. He instead provided him an opportunity to right the wrong the later had been doing by supporting evil.
Agreed he was a great warrior and he can be eulogised, but not at the expense of showing Truth (read Krishna) in a negative light!

If Krishna wanted he could have revealed this at the beginning that Karna was the eldest and the heir of the throne but he didnt. Karna would never have been humiliated and joined Dhuryodhan, so Krishna is selfish.

I have heart about one good fact about Karnas superiority over Arjuna..once in mbh there were competition after completing their training from Drona..Drona declared the greatest archer of this yuga is Arjuna..and karna entered the battle field showing his skills...after these event no one would decide who is more greater.Karna or Arjuna..
Than solution for these were found...i e the competition between both were arranged...and the target was after signal both should shoot the arrow in the mouth of creature who will open his mouth after signal...whatever creature it may be...
After these both Karna and Arjuna became ready and waiting for signal..after signal came A dog bark..and soon Arjun hit the arrow in his mouth..and Karna hit his arrow 🎯 in mouth of small bird....
And Arjuna was declared winner...but fact was that the bird opened he's mouth before dog...and dogs sound was heart by all the peoples present there....
But in all this people Bhisma and Drona knew the truth...because they only have that skill..
But to save the prestige of Kingdom of Hastinapura...they remained Silent..

Arjuna was heavily relied on gandiva bow to fight all his battles whereas karna never relied on vijaya dhanush he only used it once during his lifetime, on the 17th day of kurukshetra. As mentioned in original Mahabharata so tell who's a better Arjuna or karna

Karan never kill any innocent animal. This act was done by DEVRAJ INDER to weaken the KARAN.INDER jealous from him because he has defeated inder in mutual war.In most of curses given to karan s there was DEVRAJ INDER s' involvement.

yrr i accept that the side choosen by veer karn (kauravas army) was wrong btt karn was most powerful warrior in the whole battlefield....
nd if arjun is better than karn...then kyu karn ko itne sare curses diye gaye...without reason .....
nd y he was killed at that tym when he was not aware..he was unarmed
becz lord krishna also knows that arjun cant beat karn in face 2 face fight.....
so krishna conducted this typ of situation
to killl karna

otherwise. ..arjun k paas itna dum nhi tha kiwo karn ko harraa sake..!!

thats solve...

Who says Karna made a mistake in choosing Duryodhana? Unlike the Pandavas who believed in the varna system (Bheema even compared Karna to a dog coz of his so-called low birth), Duryodhana believed in merit. Both Karna and Duryodhana wanted a change in the social-structure and thus they were friends. The Pandavas were cheaters, they killed all Kaurava maharathis only thru deceit. Arjuna was nothing but a coward, he killed Bheeshma while hiding behind an eunuch and killed Karna from behind when the latter was defenceless. The so-called dharma-sthapana is the dirtiest joke I have ever heard.

Dude, arjuna defeated karna in 3 occasion
1.at droupadhi suyamvar
Ans: when karna vs arjun fight meets stalmate karna heard that his son sudhama get died so he refused to fight and fled to see his son
2.at gandharva fight
Ans:he could not fight at gandharva because he had already intoxicated
3.at virat war
Ans: in virat war arjuna used sanmohan asthra which make the arjun invicible so he couldn't defeated by kaurav army, and another thing the sanmohan asthra should not be used in battle as per war rules
Karna also had asthras like sanmohan named twasri asthra he did not used that at any occasion
At kurukshetra war both arjuna and karna face ups and downs ,in one occasion arjuna nearly as downfall at that time satyaki saved arjuna by interfering with karna,
And arjunas (+)
1.krishna as charioteer
2.divine and powerful horses and chariot
3.hanuman sitting in chariot flag
4.devi durga protecting chariot
5.krishna protected him from naagasthra
For karna
1.no well wishing charioteer
2.no divine horse and chariot
3.no chariot protection
4.he already lost his armour by indra
5.no second launch of naagasthra due to his mother
6.parashuraam cruse
7.brahmin cruse
8.boomadevi cruse
Having all the positive things he(arjuna) couldn't defeat karna while VIJAYA bow is on his(karna's) hand
And one more thing karna only used VIJAYA bow on 17th day of kurukshetra war while facing arjuna With GANDIVA
Unlike arjuna karna will not fight with normal person with powerful bow
Iam not saying karna is purely good but karna is well human being and in abhimanyus death, karna killed abimanyu due to free him from pain of death given by kauravas, while killing abimanyu karna whispering some words in abimanyus ear
The words are
The best archer is neither KARNA nor ARJUNA 'its you abimanyu ,its you'

Karn was the best worrior among the ones who used weapons in war. But he unfortunately was with wrong side. And arjun was with right side therefore he was protected by krishna and others.
Lekin ye b sach hy k agr aap kisi ko baar baar be izzet kryn uski caste ki wja sy or uski qualities ko tasleem krny k bjaay usko neech kehty rahyn to uska baaghi hona b natural hy.
Karn ka drupadi ki insult krna bilkul wrong tha lekin abhimanyo ko qatal krna vrishsen ya sudhama k badly k tor pr justified hy jinko arjun ny mara tha. Aap khud soch lyn k aap agr behtreen studend hon lekin aap sy aik number km ko sirf is liy zyada ahmiyet di jaay k wo aik ameer family sy ho to aap me kia gussa or baghawet nhi aay gi?
Haan ye baat tsleem krny wali hy k arjun aik acha archer hony k sath naik insaan b tha q k us ny war sy pehly b krishna sy swaal kia k kia ye sahi hy k me apny hi relatives ko kill kron. Yehi achi nature thi jiski wja sy devtaon ny uski support ki lekin naik hona aapko best archer saabit nhi krta. Archer ya best worrior skills no doubt karn k pas hi thy mery khyaal me.
